What is the biggest problem for archaeologists? Shreshta (11)
Dear Shreshta,
Archaeologists encounter many different problems but I would say one of the biggest challenges can be the weather! Especially in the winter in the UK: sites can get very wet, very muddy and it can be difficult to dig in such conditions. But the summer can be equally challenging, especially if you are digging on clay geology and it is very hot: the ground can get so hard that it takes a lot of work to excavate features!
Now I am talking about commercial archaeology here, which takes place all year round on sites where something is going to be built (houses, roads, pipelines…). And so other challenges include working on construction sites (and alongside construction workers) as health and safety become a priority and can be difficult to implement, but also very strict deadlines and sometimes having to work long hours.
As you can see, archaeologists face challenges and problems daily, yet it is still a wonderful job as the pros usually outweigh the cons: discovering new sites, digging alongside great teammates, working outside and generally contributing to expanding our knowledge of the past, all these advantages are priceless!
