What are the common problems archaeologists face on a large dig site and how can AI or new technologies help? (Henry, 11)
Hello Henry,
Common problems encountered by archaeologists can be caused by natural conditions: the weather (some weather conditions, especially in the winter in the UK, can be very tricky to work with!), but also geology, landscape (some sites are difficult to access or located in remote areas), and I am sure I am forgetting some!
There are also problems caused by our human environment, especially in commercial archaeology (which is the most common type of archaeology in the UK) where archaeologists have to work under very strict deadlines and where working conditions can be quite challenging.
AI and new technologies can be (and have been!) very helpful in many ways: now with the use of drones and 3D modelling and photogrammetry, archaeologists can produce very detailed plans and reconstructions of archaeological sites. Also, LiDAR (an aerial laser scanning technique that allows mapping of huge areas, even if it is covered by vegetation) has allowed archaeologists to discover many new sites. Archaeologists have been using magnetometry, ground penetrating radar and other similar techniques to discover or map sites without having to excavate. I have no doubt that these techniques will become even better as they are developed further, and I’m sure new techniques will also be created and be used in archaeology in the future!

Would it be useful for archaeologists have a specifically designed robot that can detect finds for them, and as a result minimise environmental damage? Charlie (14)
First of all, I am not sure if you are aware but archaeologists do use many non-invasive techniques prior to excavation. Those include aerial photography (taking images from […]
