Evidence for anesthetic being used in medieval China

Archaeologists have been investigating some fascinating surgical instruments from Ming Dynasty China which contain traces of an anesthetic. Residues on iron scissors and tweezers discovered in the 600-year-old tomb of a surgeon have been found to be a chemical numbing agent, making this the earliest evidence for numbing agents being used in surgery.
