6,000-year-old Neolithic trackway discovered in Somerset
Archaeologists from Wessex Archaeology have discovered evidence of a nearly 6000-year-old trackway dating to the Neolithic period (‘New Stone Age’), which would have been used by early farmers to cross the watery marshes of Somerset.
Trackways were raised wooden walkways that enabled prehistoric people to travel across challenging wetland environments. Thanks to the moist conditions of the area, these wooden structures plus incredible environmental evidence has been preserved, helping us learn about Neolithic people and the environment they lived in.
