Bristol YAC

Bristol YAC is open to everyone aged 8–16 years. YAC clubs get involved in all sorts of activities, including visiting and investigating archaeological sites and historic places, trying out traditional crafts, taking part in excavations, and lots more.

Bristol YAC is based at City Museum and Art Gallery on Queen’s Road, Bristol and usually meets once a month. A team of volunteers runs the club: if you want to know more about how we recruit YAC volunteers and make sure children at YAC clubs are well looked after, check out our FAQs.

Read on for some examples of what we have been up to recently. If you’d like to get involved with Bristol YAC, get in touch with the team using the details below:

Experimental Archaeology

We met at Blaise Museum on 5th April to try out how things would have been done in the past.

The students built a neolithic village, made rope from rafia, which was used to construct the dwellings.

We also tried our hand at dying cloth using natural vegetable dyes, grinding corn to flour using a pestle and mortar and weaving.

We were outside in beautiful weather and had a lovely time.

Roman School

On 12 July we held a Roman School at King’s Weston Roman Villa.

We explored life and lessons in Roman Schools, looked at reading and writing and mathematics using an abacus.
