Dig Diaries – Irchester at the Chester House Estate
This summer, members of the YAC have been joining excavations across the UK as part of our annual Dig It! competition. Here we find out all about the dig day at Irchester on the Chester House Estate in Northamptonshire.
A team of archaeologists from the University of Leicester conducted an excavation and they invited the YAC along. Here we find out all about the Dig It! day from some of the winners.
Nara and Elisa, from Fulham Palace YAC, told us:
The staff were really welcoming and made us feel part of the team. We learned you have to be very patient in the pits as you might not always find something, but in the afternoon we were lucky to dig up lots of items like animal bones and pieces of pottery. I had lots of fun that day and enjoyed scavenging through the pits to find lots of amazing stuff like many pieces of a roman pot, (hopefully) and a cow’s ankle. It was nice and sunny and it felt great to know that you were finding real things from Roman times.
