What part of archaeology do you like the most? (Cyprian, 10)
Hello Cyprian,
It is quite difficult to decide as I love many parts of archaeology!
But I guess my favourite part has to be digging, and especially digging skeletons. I specialised in osteology and was lucky enough to work on many cemeteries in France, Ireland and England. I always found it fascinating and being able to work on cemeteries and tombs or cremation burials from different periods (ranging from the Neolithic period up to the 18th century CE) has taught me many things about the past, and about how different cultures, different civilisations see death. Digging skeletons isn’t just about bones, it’s about how the living treat their dead, and you learn so much about how people in the past viewed their ancestors and their very own past.
Also, another part of archaeology that I love is post-excavation and writing reports: I have always loved reading so really enjoy having to do some research. It feels a little like doing detective work: trying to find similar sites, or other sites in the vicinity that could be related. Many aspects of archaeology are so compelling!
