What is photogrammetry? Can it be useful in documenting stepwells for example so that they can be restored as used as a water source again in arid regions? Sabrina (11)

Hello Sabrina,

Photogrammetry allows us to produce a 3D model of a structure or object, using overlapping photographs taken at different angles. So yes, in your particular example, they can be used to document stepwells and it would be a very useful technique to record them! Photogrammetry is used a lot in archaeology, but also in mapping and surveying.

Restoration would however be another step, one that has to be taken by a heritage body and I am not sure if stepwells could be used again as it would depend on many other factors: are they now regarded as archaeological features to be preserved or still as a functioning mean to provide water? What other ways could be used to provide water to these arid regions, and is it really necessary to start using stepwells again?

Stepwells have not been used since the 19th Century, since the introduction of modern water pumps but there are now talks of reviving them as they are not only architectural wonders, but they also used to be a space enjoyed by the whole community. In any case, photogrammetry will do a wonderful job of recording those magnificent monuments!
