The Auckland Project YAC is based in Bishop Auckland, and is open to everyone aged 7-16 years. The Club is a fantastic place to learn about our local past and exciting archaeology from further afield, to develop your interest and archaeological skills, and to meet new friends who love archaeology too.

About The Auckland Project YAC
YAC members at The Auckland Project get involved in all sorts of activities, including visiting and investigating archaeological sites and historic places, trying out traditional crafts, taking part in excavations, and lots more! In 2024 we won a group award from County Durham Youth Council for being an welcoming and engaging group!
We explore an archaeological concept or site(s) each session, usually involving making or sharing something alongside discovering something. In the past we’ve looked at how to tell the age of buildings, Romans forts and coins, Egyptians, stratigraphy on archaeology sites, pottery, Anglo-Saxon burials, and Medieval castles, plus many more – as well as doing some digging on live archaeological excavations at Auckland Palace, which everyone loves!
The branch is an affiliated club of the YAC network lead by archaeologists from the Project’s Curatorial Team, John and Caroline, who have a passion for both digging and museums, and are particularly interested in the archaeology around County Durham! They are supported in their role by a team of volunteers.

How to join
The club runs monthly on the second Saturday of each month (except in January and August), usually at No.43 Bishop Auckland Market Place. Our 7-11 group (primary school age) runs from 10am-12pm, and the 11-16 group (secondary school age) runs from 1pm-3pm.
Sessions are free to attend, but you’re welcome to make a donation towards our running costs (we recommend £3 per session). Sessions can be booked through The Auckland Project’s website where more information about our archaeology and YAC work can be found (https://aucklandproject.org/).
