New Zooarchaeology Resource Pack

Zooarchaeologist, Clare Rainsford, and Michelle Feider from the University of York, have created a bumper resource pack of activity ideas based on zooarchaeology on behalf of the Young Archaeologists’ Club. These four exciting activities are aimed at anyone aged 8–16.

Zooarchaeology, also known as archaeozoology, is the study of animal remains from archaeological sites to understand past human-animal interactions, diets, environments, and social structures. Most often the remains are the parts that preserve easily, such as bones and teeth, but some environments can preserve hair, hides and even DNA!In this pack, you’ll be able to explore zooarchaeology through a variety of activities, including excavating an owl pellet and reconstructing animal skeletons! You’ll also be able to explore how people in the past used animals and discover which animals have been native to the UK.

The pack was created in conjunction with a YAC leader training event that we ran in October 2024. YAC leaders joined us in York for an intro to zooarchaeology lead by Clare, and trialled the activities ahead of them being finalised.
