Do you have to sometimes visit other countries?
Eva (10)
Archaeology is a fantastic subject because it has many specialities: digging is not all there is to it, you also need to record features (which implies describing their nature, drawing, taking photographs...), you need to survey them, study the finds (pottery, bone, flint...), write a report, create plans, and to answer your question: you do not have to visit other countries but depending on the speciality you choose, you may have to!
People who specialise in one part of the world (let's say classical archaeology and Greek or Roman sites, or people specialising in Egyptology) will travel there. Other specialities, such as osteology (the study of bones) or carpology (the study of seeds) are valid anywhere.
Archaeology is a job that enables you to travel should you wish to, but many archaeologists are also specialised in their local areas and do not need or wish to travel.

Andrew (8)
It's impossible to know who the first person to be born was, but what we do know is that man (or the ancestor of man rather!) appeared around 7.2 million years ago. Our 'direct' ancestor however, the Homo Sapiens appeared only about
Hello, my name is Odile Rouard. I've always been interested in archaeology and the understanding of ancient cultures, since I started reading Greek mythology as a child.
I have been working as a professional archaeologist for many years and am looking forward to answering any questions you have about archaeology.
I graduated from York University and have worked on excavations in France, in Ireland and in England of course; I even helped train students in field archaeology on a Silk Road citadel in Kazakhstan!
I'll hear from you soon.
