Festival of Archaeology 2017: Essex Treasure Tour
Treasure Tour – Essex
2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the Treasure Act in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Since it began, thousands of items of treasure have been found by metal detectorists, field walkers and other members of the public, and have been acquired by local museums so that everyone who is interested can learn about them. To mark this anniversary, the Portable Antiquities Scheme and many local museums across the country are celebrating a season of treasure throughout 2017.
Essex in particular has an exciting and wonderfully rich archaeological record, with more treasure being found each year! During the Festival of Archaeology, you can go along to one of the Essex Treasure Tour days to find out more.
Bring some of your own finds along for identification; learn more about treasure in Essex; ask your local Finds Liaison Officer questions, and have a go at some fun, family-friendly activities!
The Treasure Tour is visiting four different museums during the Festival of Archaeology: Epping Forest Museum, Colchester Castle, Saffron Walden Museum, and Chelmsford Museum.
