Norman In each issue of Young Archaeologist magazine Norman, the archaeological worm searches the world wide web to find YAC UK members the best archaeological / heritage websites where you can:

  • Find out facts
  • Play fun games
  • Find other great things to do

Check out the websites below and contact YAC if you do any of the projects. YAC always likes to see your pictures and drawings that you have done. Who knows, they may also feature in the Young Archaeologist magazine)!


The British Museum

British Museum The brand new section of The British Museum’s website has lots of great things to do! Go to their Kids section at the bottom right of the home page. This will take you to the Young Explorer’s site. Follow the links to:

  • Create - To make at home including salt dough Lewis Chessmen, historical foods and jewellery.
  • Play - To access great games like Time Explorer and The Great Dig
  • Discover - To explore the British Museum’s collections online and learn about some of the museum’s most important objects

National Museums Scotland

NMS Logo Visit the National Museums Scotland website which is inspired by their wonderful collections. Go to the Kids section at the top of the page and explore the Romans, Eqyptians, Picts and more!


BBC Hands on History

Hands History Check out the BBC Hands on History website. In summer 2011 the BBC is celebrating all things Norman with a series of BBC Two and BBC Four TV programmes. To accompany the programmes the BBC has designed a brilliant new section of their website, where you can find out loads about the Normans and their lives.


Show Me

Show Me The Show Me website is from Culture 24 and celebrates everything that’s fun, fabulous and fascinating about museums in the UK. It is packed with the latest news and information about what’s on and what’s hot. There are also reguular competitions to enter as well!

The website has lots of cool links to to lots of museum websites. The ‘Pick a Topic’ section takes you straight to:

  • Games
  • Activity Ideas
  • Information about your favourite things
  • Topics about archaeological periods including the Romans, Vikings and Ancient Civilisations

The best section is the ‘Games and Fun’ section which has links to more than 120 top games.


Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS)

PAS The PAS website provides background information on the Portable Antiquities Scheme, news articles, events listings and access to our database of objects and images.

The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a DCMS funded project to encourage the voluntary recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public in England and Wales. Every year many thousands of objects are discovered, many of these by metal-detector users, but also by people whilst out walking, gardening or going about their daily work. Such discoveries offer an important source for understanding our past.
