My name is Siân and I found this book very interesting and I couldn’t put it down….
The year is 1665 and the Plague has returned to London. Everyone is fearful for their lives including two young cousins, Rachel and Robert. Rachel is a daughter of a silk trader. Rich as her family were, they couldn’t escape the dreaded plague. Robert however is a young man who has come to London to ‘find his fortune’. Rather than returning to plague-free Saxton, he stays with Rachel’s family but suddenly disappears.
In this ‘flipable book’, you can read both Rachel and Robert’s stories. In Rachel’s story, the author sets the scene by showing you that the people of London still believe that the plague is an airborne disease and that placing a red cross above you door was the best thing to do if you caught the plague.
I found this book very interesting and I couldn’t put it down.
These stories told me a lot of things about the plague that I didn’t know. For example, they placed a curfew for the infected to walk about when the healthy were inside.
My favourite part in the book is when Rachel and her friend wander off at night and see the cart loaded with the dead and the collector shouting “bring out your dead.”
I would recommend it to people who are interested in London’s history.
