My name is Rhys and I think this is a very interesting book full of facts about the Romans and their army.
For example, did you know that the modern word soldier comes from the late Roman and medieval word for gold coins, solidus? I also learned that a century contained 80 men and not 100 as you would think.
I also liked the fact that each chapter heading was on a different colour mosaic background. I would definitely recommend it because it is very easy to read and has lots of good illustrations of weapons, armour and sculptures from the British Museum. The fact that so much is packed into such a small book that can fit in your pocket is brilliant.
It is very descriptive although sometimes I would have liked more explanation. For example, in the ‘Other Weapons’ chapter there is a picture of a catapult which shoots bolts like a crossbow. I’ve never heard of catapults shooting bolts before and I would have liked to learn more about it.
I would definitely recommend this book to readers of any age with an interest in the Romans.
