December 2011

This issue was published in the first week of December and is the 150th issue of the Young Archaeologist magazine. YA 150

Dr Kate Pretty, founder of the Young Archaeologists’ Club and the original magazine editor tells us how it all began nearly 40 years ago.

There’s a great interview with the wonderfully witty Martin Brown, the creator of the Horrible Histories characters! He takes you through a step-by-step guide on how to draw a Horrible Histories character. There is also a competition to win 2 tickets to one of the Horrible Histories live shows.

We visit Denmark in this issue’s ‘Where in the World?’

There are loads of facts to wow your friends and family with in the first installment of our 150 Fascinating Facts feature.

YAC UK member Huw takes us on a trip to the Thames foreshore to a dig which was part of the CBA’s Festival of British Archaeology.

Autumn 2011

This issue was published in the first week of September and deals with the subject of Industrial Heritage. YAC finds out about the UK’s industrial heritage and why some of it is currently at risk. YA 149

YAC meets Dr Alice Roberts on location as she films the new series of Digging for Britain which will be hitting our TV screens in September 2011, and YAC talks to her about her new book Evolution: The Human Story.

YAC journeys to Kenya for ‘Where in the World’ to learn about archaeological exploration past and present. YAC catches up with Raksha and the Time Team in Beadnell in Northumberland at the site of an old 13th Century chapel.

The winners of our Festival of History and ‘Dig It’ competitions tell YAC all about their amazing days out.

There are also loads of new competitions including the Heritage at Risk competition where you could win a Horrible Histories game and a ‘Build your own Stonehenge’ kit.

There is an Iron Age Grainstore YAC Attack! activity and two great new book reviews to read.

Summer 2011

This issue was published in the first week of June. YA 148

In this issue YAC launched the ‘Dig It’ competition, our great annual competition to win experience on a real like archaeological site. This year you could be helping out at Hungate in York or at the Dig for Shakespeare in Stratford upon Avon.

YAC finds out about a dig at Newick primary school in East Sussex which was part of a project run by the University College London Centre for Applied Archaeology (UCLCAA).

Our ‘Where in the World’ feature looks at the archaeology of the Scottish islands of St Kilda.

YAC catches up with Time Team at the filming of their 200th episode in Devon.

YAC finds out about YAC UK member Hannah’s, other life as a Saxon.

YA 145 YAC travels to Easter Island in the Southern Pacific Ocean to discover the majestic Moai stone statues which are dotted across the treeless landscape.

YA 144 The Summer issue of Young Archaeologist magazine was themed around William Shakespeare and Elizabethan England.

Find out more about English poet William Shakespeare and the current excavations at his old home in Stratford upon Avon.

YAC launches the 2010 ‘Dig It’ competition with opportunities to dig at Hungate in York or at the Dig for Shakespeare at Shakespeare’s House in Stratford upon Avon.

‘Where in the World’ takes YAC to Qatar to discover their buried archaeological sites.

Raksha Dave from Time Team tells YAC about this month’s excavation.

The YAC Attack! in this issue is all about making Elizabethan knot gardens. It describes how to create your own knot garden, using cress to make the box hedges.


Spring 2010

YA 143 The Spring Issue of Young Archaeologist was published in March 2010 and explores how climate change affects archaeology.

Emily Hellewell discovers how climate change affected the UK and the people who lived there during the Mesolithic period and Sue Morecroft from the Council for British Archaeology tells us more about the possible future effects of climate change on archaeology.

In this issue of ‘Where in the World’ YAC visits the Solomon Islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean to see how their archaeology is being affected by climate change.

YAC catches up with YAC UK member and competition winner Madeleine, following her V.I.P. visit to the newly opened Jorvik Viking Centre in York.

We talk to with Raksha Dave as she tells us about her favourite sites from the upcoming, new series of Time Team.

Also in this issue, YAC Attack! shows you how to package archaeological finds and gives you the chance to create your own chocolate finds!


Winter 2009

YA 142 The Winter 2009 issue of the magazine had a Time Team theme.

YAC and the 2009 Celebration Challenge winners visit a Time Team dig in Cambridgeshire so they could present their wining entries to Time Team.

YAC UK member Olivia won the 12-16 age category and presented her jumper to Mick. YAC UK member Hannah won the 8-11 age category and presented her cake to the Time Team members. Newcastle YAC Branch members Tom and Stella, who won the group category, presented their banner to the Time Team members.

YAC launched a new competition to design a coin to be struck at the new Jorvik Viking Centre. Keep watching, the winner will be announced soon.

We visit the Republic of Ireland in our ‘Where in the World’ feature to discover megalithic tombs, castles, churches and shipwrecks.

This month’s YAC Attack! challenge YAC UK members to make a mini roundhouse!


Autumn 2009
YA 141 This issue of the magazine had a Viking theme.

In the Site Notebook we learn about the strong Viking heritage on the Island of Unst in the Shetland Islands and the Belmont excavation which is taking place there.

‘Where in the World’ visits India and find out more about the archaeology of the ancient Indus civilisation.

YAC talks about Dem Bones in the archaeology of human remains.
