Norman Surfing

Surfing the Net

  • Make sure a parent, teacher or guardian knows when you’re using the Internet.
  • Tell your parent, carer or trusted adult if you ever find yourself in a situation online where you feel uncomfortable, worried or if someone is being bullied onlineunhappy. If this happens tell an adult that you trust immediately!
  • Report concerns to the Child Exploitation & Online Protection Centre (CEOP).
  • Use internet websites, blogs, etc with caution and know how to block and report unwanted users.
  • Only use a webcam with people you know.
  • If a website asks you to register with them and you have to fill out an email form, always ask for an adult’s opinion.

Passwords

  • Passwords only keep you safe if they are completely secret.
  • Try not to use names of your family or pets because people can guess them quite easily.
  • Use a mix of letters and numbers instead.

Email Safety

  • Unless you have permission from an adult, you should never give out personal details such as:
    • your name
    • your home address
    • details of your school
    • your email address
    • your home phone number or mobile number
    • a photo of yourself
    • your parents’ credit card details
  • Don’t open emails, downloads or attachments from people you don’t know: these might contain viruses
  • If you get an email with rude or unpleasant things, you must tell a responsible adult straight away and don’t reply to it! Remember that it’s not your fault that someone has sent you this.
  • Spam, or unwanted emails, are usually aimed at adults and can be upsetting for children.
    • Most internet and email companies have some sort of system in place to block spam.
    • There is special software which can stop spam getting into your Inbox.
    • Speak to a parent or guardian if you are at all worried.
