MAYA YAC's Family archaeology day
Archaeologists old and young gathered for our Family Archaeology Day at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton at the end of September. This was a joint event run by MAYA and the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society.
Star of the show was Phil Harding from Time Team who spent the day chatting with members of the public, posing for photos with fans of the TV programme and signing autographs. The highlight of the day was a flint knapping demonstration by Phil who made us a flint arrowhead!
Information displays and activities included: a sand pit excavation, pottery display, finds identification, make your own Bronze Age lunula brooch, experimental archaeology display, old maps, fossils, and even face painting!
At the end of the day Phil, presented MAYA with a new mascot – a figure of Mick Aston knitted by Adell Mason who had recently auctioned figures of Mick and Phil on the Time Team fans' Facebook page to raise money for MAYA.
The event was a huge success with over 300 people visiting us throughout the day. A really big thank you to everyone who helped out!
