Festival of Archaeology 2017: Exploring Wandlebury hillfort with Cambridge YAC
On the Gog Magog Hills just 2.5 miles south of Cambridge, a charity called Cambridge Past, Present & Future (CambridgePPF) manages 110 acres of beautiful woods and chalk grassland called Wandlebury Country Park.
The central area of the park is a Scheduled Ancient Monument... the remains of a 5th century BC Iron Age hillfort!
Cambridge YAC are organising a special event at the hillfort for the Festival of Archaeology. Club leader, Pippa Smith, told us more...
About Wandlebury hillfort
The first hillfort was constructed at Wandlebury in around 400 BC, and one of the original and entire circular ditches still remains. A recent dig found the hill top has housed a very extensive Iron Age settlement, but the full extent of the settlement remains a mystery.... will you be able to spot the entrances, find the palisade location, and discover whether there were other ditches?!
You can read more about the hillfort on the CambridgePPF website.
Our Iron Age adventures
Cambridge YAC is very lucky because CambridgePPF let us meet at Wandlebury hillfort. Over the last few months, we have been thinking about what life was like in the Iron Age and have tried lots of different Iron Age activities.
We have investigated, measured and drawn one of the ditches, and some of our older members have researched and planned an Iron Age trail around the hillfort. We have thought about how museums and heritage sites interpret the history of the site for different visitors and have put all of this together to plan an event to help people find out more about Wandlebury Hillfort and life in the Iron Age.
Come along to our Festival of Archaeology event!
On July 15th, our YAC members will help visitors to make pots, weave cords, throw slingshots, create model Iron Age walls, and try their hand at a sandpit excavation!
Our trail, designed by the YAC members themselves, will take people round the Iron Age hillfort, and we hope to have a gallery of reconstruction pictures created by the members showing what Wandlebury might have looked like 2,400 years ago.
