Facial reconstruction and poo!
Recently Glamorgan YAC had some brilliant sessions discovering all about facial reconstruction in archaeology and looking at what else we can discover from human remains when we made our own coprolites (or poos for you non-archaeologists)!
For our first session we used a replica skull (which we bought onlin) and placed matchsticks in strategic points to allow for skin and tissue depth. The skull was then covered with playdough. We were amazed at how much playdough this used up (we used different colours for the different parts of the face).
We then made our fake coprolites with many different 'ingredients'. In our follow-up session, we swapped them in order to excavate them looking for the dietary evidence which would enable us to guess which culture they were from.
We ended this session by learning about finds washing and fossils.
