Dunfermline YAC in the Graveyard
The new Dunfermline YAC began meeting in summer 2015. The club has already been involved with an exciting project in one of the town's graveyards. Club leader Mark Seaborne explains more..
For the last three summers a group of Dunfermline Heritage Community Projects (DHCP) members have been digging in the Abbey Church graveyard for gravestones that have sunk beneath the earth. This year they asked Dunfermline YAC to join in and gave us our own trench to dig!
We excavated for a week in early August and uncovered two lost gravestones. Now that the schools are back (yep, Scottish schools go back in August) we are continuing to work at weekends. As well as excavating, we have been given the job of planning the gravestones uncovered.
Our first stone commemorated Adam Paterson, a merchant of Dunfermline who died in 1796, his wife Catherine Murray (died 1812) and two daughters who died in 1831 and 1861. (Click here for a zoomable image of the gravestone on our website)
