Field Archaeology

Resistivity Survey

A field archaeologist’s day can be very varied. As you might have guessed they spend a lot of time digging and recording what is found but it also involves collecting lots of different data. This can include geophysics and soil samples. Field archaeologists also survey the landscape so that they can build computer models of the shape of the ground.

Ian and Nicky

A field archaeologist might work on many different types of site. Ian is a field archaeologist and works on sites that are all in places where new constructions are being planned. He sees if building there will damage any important archaeology.

My favourite things about being a field archaeologist are working outside in the summer and the excitement of discovery. The pay and working conditions are not very good but I wouldn’t do anything else. Being a field archaeologist is great fun!

Most people working in field archaeology do have a degree. Subjects like maths, geography and science, as well as history, all help in being an archaeologist. Of course, being a member of YAC is a great way to get started!
