YAC Branches

Worchestershire YAC Branch excavating at Croome 2006 Newark and District YAC Branch experimental archaeology project YAC Branches are fab and there are around 70 of them all over the UK! Most meet about once a month, on a Saturday, and they are a great way to learn more about archaeology in your area and make new friends.

YAC Branches are run by teams of volunteers who generously give up their free time to help young people find out more about their local heritage. Parents and guardians might like to find out more about how YAC Branches are staffed and run. For most YAC Branches you have to be 8 years old or over to attend sessions; some Branches ask that you are 9 or over.

YAC Branches cover a huge range of different activities. You might find yourself:

  • Finding out how archaeologists excavate
  • Trying your hand at historic crafts such as spinning and weaving or flint knapping
  • Visiting archaeological or heritage sites
  • Trying out food from different periods of time
  • …and much more!

Each Branch will organise a programme of events in advance; you might even be lucky enough to be involved with a real excavation!

Please note that by joining YAC UK you do not get automatic access to a local Branch as there can be a limited number of places per Branch. Branches may also make their own charges to cover their costs. Go to our Branch Map to find out where your nearest Branch is and how to contact them to see if they have any free spaces.

If you would like to join your local YAC Branch, contact the Branch directly. To find your nearest Branch and contact details visit our Branch List page or the Branch Map page.

If you know of anyone aged over 17 who would like to volunteer at a YAC Branch or who may be interested in setting up a new Branch?
