Olympic Archaeology
Welcome back (or for the first time)! We will use this session for the usual paperwork and meeting new members, and to use the GNM’s fantastic Greek artefact collection to explore the origins of the Olympic Games.
November 19/11/2011
Zooarchaeology: the study of animal bones
We will meet at GNM but will then head over to the Wolfson Laboratory at the University, where Tori Park will help us look at a range of excavated animal bones and ask what they can tell us about life in the past.
December 17/12/2011
Christmas in the workhouse
Our Christmas event this year will have a Victorian workhouse theme. There will be games, music (Oliver!) and presents to make. Please dress up and bring some food to share.
January 21/01/2012
Treasure wrecks and slave ships
Diver and archaeologist Michael Smith will be joining us to talk about underwater archaeology, and we will look at two important kinds of wreck: Spanish treasure fleets and ships from the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
February 18/02/2012
The Norman conquest
A session dedicated to the Battle of Hastings and the arrival of the Normans in Britain. We will use the Bayeux tapestry to tell the story of the battle and will then, of course, re-enact it for ourselves!!
March 17/03/2012
Flint tools and flint knapping
It has been a while since we had a go at making our own flint tools, so we thought it would be great to ask Rob Young to introduce us to stone tools, and show us all how to make our own, in the garden outside GNM.
April 21/04/20112 (FULL DAY 10.00-4.00)
Mini excavation day (venue to be announced)
Hannah has spent much of the last year working with school groups, carrying out mini excavations (of one metre square test pits) in a single day. This is a brilliant introduction to the basic techniques of archaeological fieldwork and recording, so come along for a day’s digging on a medieval site!
May 19/05/2012
Finds processing
We will meet at GNM then go over to the Wolfson Laboratory to wash, indentify, record and draw all the finds (there will be loads, we hope…) from our mini excavation last month.
June 16/06/2012 (11.00am-2.00pm)
Field trip to Ulnaby Medieval Farm
Ulnaby is at High Coniscliffe, near Darlington (see http://medievalulnaby.co.uk/). Rob will give us a guided tour of the brilliantly preserved deserted medieval village here, and in place of (or in addition to!) a picnic lunch, we will have one of the lovely farmhouse teas provided by the Tea Shop. You will need your own transport, and your family are welcome to join us for the whole visit There will be a charge of £5.00 per person to cover the cost of this visit. We will pay this for YAC members: parents and additional kids will need to pay on the day.
July (date to be finalised)
Dig Day at Derwentcote Steelworks
Jane’s fieldschool for the University moves to the 18th century cottages at Derwentcote Steelworks in 2011, and the YAC excavation day will take place here too. The site is 10 miles from Newcastle, near Hamsterley: see http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/derwentcote-steel-furnace/. And have a look at Timeteam’s dig here at http://www.channel4.com/programmes/time-team/articles/derwentcote-dig-report. You will need your own transport and your family are welcome to spend the day digging with us too.
This programme may be subject to minor changes.
